This beautiful blue and white plate from English company, Salem China in their "English Village" pattern is a classic example of transferware. Transferware was first introduced in the late 18 century as a more affordable way of printing patterns onto ceramics. This 10" ironstone beauty is in excellent vintage condition and was hand engraved with underglaze (where a piece is dipped into a glaze with excess shaken off to leave a fine coating over the transfer).
